Description

A Halloween twist on the classic Shepherd’s Pie, featuring seasoned meat, creamy mashed potatoes, and spooky black olive designs.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef or lamb
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 4 tablespoons butter (unsalted, softened)
  • Black olives (for spooky faces)
  • Grated cheese (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, add ground beef or lamb. Cook until browned and drain excess fat.
  3. Stir in chopped onion, diced carrots, and minced garlic. Sauté until tender, around 5-7 minutes.
  4. Add frozen peas, tomato paste, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and season with salt and pepper. Simmer for about 10 minutes.
  5. In a pot, boil cubed potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain and mash with milk and butter, seasoning with salt and pepper.
  6. In a baking dish, pour the meat mixture as the first layer, then spread the mashed potatoes on top.
  7. Use black olives to create spooky faces on the mashed potatoes.
  8. Sprinkle grated cheese over the top.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, until cheese is golden and bubbly.

Notes

For a vegetarian version, substitute meat with lentils and vegetable broth. Prepare the meat filling ahead for convenience.
