Description

An elegant take on a classic, this Easy Apple Casserole features tender fruit balanced with a crisp, buttery topping, perfect for a polished brunch or dinner finish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • Pinch of fine salt
  • Optional: 1/4 cup chopped toasted pecans or walnuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Butter a 9×13-inch baking dish and set aside.
  2. Toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, butter, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour until evenly coated.
  3. Spread the apple mixture into the prepared dish in a single, even layer.
  4. Combine oats, flour, granulated sugar, and salt in a bowl. Add cold cubed butter and rub until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Scatter the crumble evenly over the apple layer.
  6. Bake for 35–45 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and a knife inserted meets tender apples.
  7. Optional: For a glossy finish, brush warmed apricot jam over the topping in the last 5 minutes.

Notes

Serve warm with optional garnishes like powdered sugar, nuts, or crème fraîche. For longer storage, freeze the unbaked casserole.
