Scale
- 6 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Pinch of ground nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed

- Toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, butter, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour until evenly coated.
- Spread the apple mixture into the prepared dish in a single, even layer.
- Combine oats, flour, granulated sugar, and salt in a bowl. Add cold cubed butter and rub until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Scatter the crumble evenly over the apple layer.
- Bake for 35–45 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and a knife inserted meets tender apples.
- Optional: For a glossy finish, brush warmed apricot jam over the topping in the last 5 minutes.
Notes
Serve warm with optional garnishes like powdered sugar, nuts, or crème fraîche. For longer storage, freeze the unbaked casserole.
