Description

Delightful, healthier pizza rolls filled with savory pepperoni and mozzarella, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup warm water (about 110°F)
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (extra virgin)
  • 1/4 cup marinara sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 3 ounces low-fat pepperoni, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup part-skim mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a bowl, combine warm water and yeast. Allow it to bloom for about 5 minutes until foamy. Stir in olive oil, salt, and flour until a dough forms. Knead on a lightly floured surface for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  2. Rest the Dough: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm environment for 30-40 minutes, or until it doubles in size.
  3. Make the Filling: In a separate bowl, mix the chopped pepperoni, mozzarella cheese, marinara sauce, oregano, and garlic powder until well combined.
  4. Roll and Cut: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into squares.
  5. Assemble the Rolls: Place a spoonful of the filling in the center of each square. Fold over the dough, pinching the edges to seal securely. Arrange them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  6. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.

Notes

Warming the rolls in the oven for 5-10 minutes after storage will help maintain their crispiness.
