- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 3/4 cup buttermilk (room temperature)
- 1/4 cup melted butter (cooled)
- 1 large egg (room temperature)
- 2 tbsp red food coloring
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 2 tsp ground cinnamon
- Extra melted butter to spread (about 2 tbsp)
- 1/2 cup cream cheese (softened)
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup milk (to thin as needed)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a baking pan.
- In a bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients for the dough.
- In another bowl, beat the wet ingredients until smooth.
- Combine wet and dry ingredients to form a soft dough.
- Roll the dough into a rectangle on a floured surface.
- Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar.
- Roll the dough tightly and cut into 8–10 slices.
- Place in the pan, cover, and let rise for 30 minutes.
- Bake for 20–25 minutes until set.
- Make the frosting by blending cream cheese, powdered sugar, and milk until smooth.
- Spread frosting over warm rolls and serve.
Notes
Use unsalted butter for better flavor. Let the egg and buttermilk reach room temperature for a smoother dough.
