Description
Craft soft pretzels with a golden exterior and chewy interior using this simple recipe, perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup warm water (110°F)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- 4 cups water
- Coarse sea salt
- 1 tablespoon melted butter (for brushing)
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, dissolve the granulated sugar in warm water, then sprinkle the yeast on top. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.
- Add the softened butter to the yeast mixture, then gradually stir in the flour until a dough forms.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface. Knead for about 5–7 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm area for approximately one hour or until it doubles in size.
- In a large saucepan, bring water and baking soda to a gentle boil.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope and twist into a pretzel shape.
- Carefully drop each pretzel into the boiling baking soda bath for about 30 seconds, then remove with a slotted spoon and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Brush each pretzel with melted butter and sprinkle generously with coarse sea salt.
- Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C) and bake for 12–15 minutes, until golden brown and fragrant.
Notes
For extra flavor, consider adding herbs to the dough or serving with gourmet dips.
