Description

Warm, zesty, and a little spicy, these cookies combine bright orange, warm clove, and a sweet shiny glaze for a cozy treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 to 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons fresh orange juice (for glaze)
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest (for glaze)
  • Pinch of salt (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, ground cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a bowl. Set aside.
  3. Cream the softened butter with granulated and brown sugar until light and fluffy, about 2–3 minutes.
  4. Beat in the egg, orange zest, orange juice, and vanilla until smooth.
  5. Add the dry ingredients to the wet in two additions and stir until just combined.
  6. Chill the dough for 20–30 minutes in the fridge.
  7. Scoop tablespoons of dough onto the prepared sheets, leaving about 2 inches between cookies, and flatten slightly.
  8. Bake for 10–12 minutes until the edges are set and the centers look soft.
  9. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
  10. To make the glaze, whisk powdered sugar with orange juice, zest, and a pinch of salt until smooth.
  11. Drizzle or dip cooled cookies in the glaze and let set for 15–20 minutes.

Notes

Use unsalted butter for better control of salt; sift powdered sugar for a smooth glaze; make sure the egg is room temperature for easier blending.
