Description
Juicy beef patties smothered in a rich and savory mushroom gravy, perfect for a comforting family dinner.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup cremini mushrooms, sliced
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1/2 cup beef broth
- 1/4 cup red wine or Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon flour
- 2 cups mashed potatoes or buttered egg noodles
Instructions
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the olive oil. Form the ground beef into equal-sized patties and season with salt and pepper. Sear the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side until nicely browned.
- Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
- Add the chopped onions to the same skillet and cook until translucent. This builds the flavor base for the gravy.
- Add the sliced mushrooms and cook until softened.
- Stir in the flour and cook for another minute to create a roux.
- Gradually pour in the beef broth and red wine (or Worcestershire sauce), stirring constantly until the mixture starts to thicken.
- Return the cooked hamburger patties to the skillet and spoon the gravy over them. Simmer together for a few minutes so flavors meld.
- Serve the hamburger steaks over creamy mashed potatoes or buttered egg noodles.
Notes
For extra flavor, add garlic to the onions when sautéing. This dish is also freezer-friendly for up to 3 months.
